Check to See If It's Time to File 48-Hour Notices

Since 2018 is an election year, there are a few extra filing requirements for candidate campaign committees. This includes filing 48-hour notices before both the primary and general elections.

According to the FEC, 48-Hour Notices are filed for donations over $1,000 that are received less than 20 days but no more than 48 hours before the day of the election. A 48-Hour Notice is required for all contributions made to the candidate committee including:

• Contributions from the candidate

• Joint fundraisers in which the campaign participates

• Loans from the candidate and other non-bank sources

• Endorsements or guarantees of loans from banks

In 2018, Texas is the first state to hold primaries or a convention this calendar year on March 6, so any campaign for a federal race must file 48-Hour Notices between February 15 – March 3, 2018.

Because primary dates vary by state, each Close of Books date and 48-Hour Notice period will be different. It is critical that all federal campaigns check the dates for the correct time to submit a 48-Hour Notice or bookmark the FEC’s reporting schedule for additional information.
