CMDI was founded in Northern Virginia in 1981 as Campaign Mail & Data, Inc., back when direct mail data management was the frontier of political technology. One of our earliest projects was the Smarter Voter Database, built for the Reagan campaign. The tools have changed beyond recognition since then. The job hasn’t. The people who raise the money and keep it compliant still need technology worth staking a campaign on.
Today we’re introducing a refreshed CMDI. New websites, new products, and a much simpler way to see how everything fits together.
A company that builds firsts
The refresh is new. The pattern behind it is not. For four and a half decades, when campaign fundraising needed a tool that didn’t exist, CMDI built it:
- 1987 — the first PC-based, networked Iowa caucus tracking system
- 1993 — the first software-as-a-service system for political fundraising and compliance, years before anyone called it SaaS
- 1996 — the first electronic report ever filed with the Federal Election Commission. Not our first. The first. We’ve filed more than 91,000 since.
- 2006 — the first political SaaS CRM
- 2008 — Crimson, the first web-based enterprise CRM built for political campaigns
- 2012 — the first and only automated system for calculating and reporting Joint Fundraising Committee distributions
Today, Pulse and DialR are the newest additions, built on infrastructure Republican campaigns, committees, and PACs have trusted through every cycle since 1981. In the 2024 cycle alone, CMDI managed $4.07 billion in donations from 9.55 million donors, filed 9,605 FEC reports, and served winning clients in 42 states.
What changed, and what didn’t
The change goes well beyond a logo. Pulse, a new predictive donor intelligence product, and DialR, a new call-time tool now opening for early access, join Crimson on the same data backbone. The new CMDI.com and the product sites put the whole ecosystem in one view: each product with one name, one job, and one place to see it.
Everything underneath stays put. The compliance rigor, the security posture built for sensitive donor data, and a support team that understands campaigns because they’ve worked on them. If you’re a current client, your data, your account, and your day-to-day are exactly where they were.
One ecosystem, one data backbone
CMDI is the foundation: the shared data backbone, the compliance expertise, and the security everything else stands on.
Crimson is the flagship, the system of record where a campaign’s whole operation lives. Fundraising, FEC compliance, events, and donor management in one platform, trusted since 2008.
Pulse is the intelligence layer. It reads the donor data you already keep in Crimson and turns it into forward-looking guidance: who is most likely to give, roughly how much, and when to ask.
DialR makes candidate call time faster to run and simpler to track, and writes every outcome back to Crimson. Join the beta list to be first in line for early access.
Because they share one backbone, they reinforce each other. A pledge captured in DialR, a prediction surfaced by Pulse, and a deadline tracked in Crimson all draw on the same constituent record. No exports, no re-keying, no reconciling spreadsheets at midnight.
Why it matters to a working fundraising operation
Most campaigns don’t lose money for lack of effort. They lose it in the gaps between disconnected tools: the donor who slipped through because the finance director’s spreadsheet never talked to compliance, the pledge that evaporated after a strong call, the ask that went out at the wrong moment because nobody could see the whole picture. Keeping fundraising, compliance, and donor intelligence on one foundation closes those gaps.
What to expect next
Over the coming weeks we’ll get specific: a close look at what Pulse can reveal in a donor file, practical Crimson workflows for the fall, the opening of the DialR early-access list, and, as the 2026 reporting deadlines approach, compliance guidance from the team that has been filing since before e-filing existed.
If you’ve worked with CMDI before, you’ll recognize the substance. If you’re new, this is a good moment to see what 45 years of campaign technology looks like today.
